Audio Metadata Viewer

Inspect what an audio file actually contains: codec, sample rate, channels, bitrate, duration and any embedded tags. This is the first thing to check when a file will not play or sounds wrong. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

How it works

What happens to your file.

ffprobe reads the container and stream headers. The result starts with a plain summary: title, artist, album, year, track, genre, length, format, bitrate, sample rate, channels, bit depth, whether there is cover art, the language of each audio track, and the chapters of an audiobook or podcast. Every tag and ffprobe’s full report follow. The file is not modified.

Questions

Common questions.

What sample rate should my audio be?

44.1 kHz is the standard for music and 48 kHz for video work. Podcast platforms generally accept either.

Why does my file say mono?

It has a single audio channel, which is common and perfectly fine for speech. Many podcast workflows deliberately use mono to halve file size.

Does this show the actual bitrate?

Yes, as reported by the stream. For variable bitrate files this is the average across the file rather than a constant value.

Does it show chapters?

Yes. An audiobook or a podcast with chapters lists each one with its title and start time.
