Image Compressor

Shrink JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF files while choosing the quality and, for supported formats, a target size in kilobytes. The preview workflow lets you trade a smaller upload for the detail your image actually needs. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

How it works

What happens to your file.

Each picture stays in its own format unless you choose another: a JPEG comes back as a JPEG, a PNG as a PNG, and an iPhone HEIC photo as a JPEG every site accepts. Photos are saved again at the quality you set, as optimised progressive JPEG; PNG screenshots and graphics are reduced to 256 well-chosen colours, the way TinyPNG does, and that version is kept only when it is smaller. With a Target KB, the quality is searched for the largest file under the limit, and if even the lowest quality is over it, the picture is scaled down step by step until it fits, as upload forms that want a photo under 50 KB require. The camera’s colour profile is kept, so colours do not shift, and a transparent picture saved as JPEG gets white behind it, not black.

Where it stops: Lossy compression removes detail permanently. A picture already compressed harder than the quality you chose would only grow if saved again, so instead of handing back a bigger file you are told to lower the quality, pick WebP, or set a Target KB. A target too small to reach even at the smallest size gets a message saying so.

Questions

Common questions.

Will my JPEG turn into a PNG or WebP?

No. The picture stays in its own format unless you choose another in More options. HEIC photos from an iPhone become JPEG, which every site accepts.

Does compression change the image dimensions?

No, unless a Target KB can only be met by making the picture smaller. Use Resize Image when you want different pixel dimensions.

Which format is smallest?

WebP or AVIF is often smaller for photographs, while PNG is useful for lossless graphics and transparency.

Can I set a maximum file size?

Yes. Set Target KB and the result is at or under it. If the lowest quality is not enough, the picture is scaled down until it fits, so a form’s 50 KB limit is met.

Why was my picture refused?

It is already compressed more than the quality you chose, so saving it again would make it bigger. Choose a lower quality, WebP, or a Target KB.
