Gunzip File

Decompress a .gz file back to its original contents. Handles the log files, dumps and downloads that arrive gzipped, with a hard ceiling on output size so a malicious archive cannot fill the disk. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

How it works

What happens to your file.

The gzip stream is decompressed under a streaming output-size limit, so decompression stops cleanly if the result would exceed the configured ceiling rather than consuming unbounded space. The filename gzip recorded in its header is used for the result, which matters when the .gz was renamed on its way to you; only the bare name is honoured, never a path it tries to supply. A download cut short, an empty file, or a file compressed with bzip2, xz, Zstandard or ZIP rather than gzip gets a sentence saying which, instead of an error code.

Questions

Common questions.

My file is .tar.gz — will this work?

This will decompress it to a .tar, and then you still need to unpack that. Extract TAR does both steps at once. A .tgz comes back as a .tar for the same reason.

Why did it stop with a size limit error?

The decompressed result exceeded the safety ceiling. That protects against decompression bombs, where a tiny file expands to an enormous one.

Is the original filename restored?

Yes, where the gzip header records one, so a file saved as download.gz comes back under the name it actually had. Otherwise the .gz extension is simply removed.

What if the .gz is not really gzip?

You are told what it is instead: bzip2, xz, Zstandard, ZIP and 7-Zip files are named, and a file that ends early is reported as incomplete.
