What happens to your file.
Your file is read in your browser first, so the length, channels, sample rate and loudness are shown before anything is sent. FFmpeg then decodes the AAC audio inside the M4A container and re-encodes it as MP3 at the quality you choose, keeping the original sample rate and channel layout. The embedded cover picture is copied across as an attached picture rather than discarded, and the container tags are mapped to ID3v2 so players show the track details.
Where it stops: M4A to MP3 is a lossy-to-lossy conversion: the audio is decoded and re-compressed, so it cannot gain quality and a very low bitrate will audibly lose some. Choose 192 kbps or higher for music; 128 kbps is ample for speech. A DRM-protected M4A from a store purchase cannot be converted by anything, including this. Files are sent to our server for conversion and deleted as soon as the job finishes.
Which quality setting?
| Setting | Best for |
|---|---|
| V0 (variable) | Music you care about; roughly 245 kbps and hard to tell from the source |
| V2 (variable) | The usual choice for music — about 190 kbps for noticeably smaller files |
| V4 (variable) | Podcasts and spoken word at about 165 kbps |
| 320 kbps fixed | When something specifically requires a constant bitrate |
| 128 kbps fixed | Voice memos, lectures and interviews |
| 64 kbps fixed | Speech where size matters more than quality |
Variable or fixed bitrate?
Variable bitrate spends more data on complex passages and less on simple ones, so it reaches better quality than a fixed rate at the same average size. Every player made this century handles it. Choose a fixed bitrate only when something downstream specifically asks for one — some broadcast and telephony systems do.
What people use it for.

Common questions.
Will the MP3 sound worse than the M4A?
Slightly, because the audio is decompressed and compressed again. At V2 or 192 kbps and above the difference is inaudible to most people on most equipment; for speech recordings 128 kbps is indistinguishable in practice.
Does it keep the album artwork?
Yes. The embedded picture is copied into the MP3 as an attached picture. Most online converters drop it, which is why the file plays but shows a blank cover.
Are the title and artist kept?
Yes. Container tags are mapped to ID3v2 tags, so players show the track details. You can turn that off if you would rather the file carried nothing.
Which bitrate should I pick?
For a voice memo, lecture or interview, 128 kbps is plenty and keeps files small. For music, V2 or 256 kbps. Going higher than the original never adds quality, only file size.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Add up to 20 files and they are converted together and returned as a ZIP.
Is my recording uploaded?
The details shown before you convert are read in your browser. The conversion itself runs on our own server, with no external service and no account; the working copy is deleted as soon as the job finishes.
