How it works

What happens to your file.

FFmpeg reads the MKV streams and writes H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container, with fast-start metadata so it can begin playing before it has fully downloaded. Every audio track is carried over, 5.1 surround stays 5.1, and text subtitles such as SRT or ASS are converted into MP4 subtitles. 10-bit and HDR video comes out as 8-bit in standard range, which phones and TVs play.

Where it stops: Image-based subtitles, the PGS and VobSub tracks most film rips carry, cannot go into an MP4 at all and are left out; text subtitles are converted. Conversion re-encodes the media and can reduce quality.

Questions

Common questions.

Why convert MKV to MP4?

MP4 is accepted by more browsers, phones and upload services.

Are subtitles preserved?

Text subtitles (SRT, ASS) are converted into the subtitle format MP4 uses and kept. Image-based subtitles (PGS, VobSub) cannot be stored in an MP4, so they are left out rather than failing the conversion; burn them into the picture in a desktop tool first if you need them.

Can I convert a DRM file?

No. DRM-protected media is not supported.
