GIF to Video

Convert an animated GIF into an MP4 video. The same animation as H.264 is typically a small fraction of the size, and it plays properly on platforms that no longer accept GIF uploads. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

How it works

What happens to your file.

FFmpeg re-encodes the animation as H.264 in an MP4 container, scaling to even dimensions because the codec requires them, with a faststart flag so playback begins before the file fully downloads. MP4 cannot be see-through, so the transparent parts of a GIF are laid on white, as the GIF appeared on the page it came from, instead of turning black; a WebM keeps the transparency itself.

Where it stops: The GIF must actually be animated. A still GIF is rejected rather than being turned into a one-frame video that looks broken.

MP4 or WebM?

  • MP4 (H.264) plays everywhere, including in messages, on social platforms and in presentation software. It is the default.
  • WebM (VP9) is smaller at the same quality and suits your own web pages, but not every app or platform accepts it.

Which quality setting?

SettingWhen to use it
HighClose to the original, for a video that will be edited again or shown large
Good (default)A sensible balance, and usually far smaller than the GIF
SmallerNoticeably compressed on detailed frames, fine for most sharing
SmallestVisible artefacts on movement; only when a size limit is strict

Length and looping

By default the video is exactly as long as one play of the GIF, because a two-second animation should not quietly come back as ten seconds. Turn on "Loop to a set length" to repeat it up to 120 seconds, for a background clip or a platform that wants a longer video. The width and height are rounded down to even numbers, which H.264 requires, so an odd-sized GIF loses at most one pixel on an edge.

Questions

Common questions.

Why was my GIF rejected?

It has only a single frame, so there is no animation to convert. The tool refuses rather than handing back a one-frame video that appears broken.

How much smaller will it be?

Often dramatically. GIF is an inefficient format for video, and H.264 versions of the same animation are frequently a tenth of the size or less.

Will it have sound?

No. GIF has no audio track, so the resulting video is silent. Use Add Audio to Video to attach one.
