Markdown to Word Converter

Turn Markdown into a real, editable Word document. Headings become Word heading styles, tables become Word tables, code blocks stay monospaced and task lists keep their check boxes. No address in your Markdown is ever fetched.

How it works

What happens to your file.

The Markdown is converted to HTML first and then mapped onto Word constructs, so it shares one well-tested engine with the HTML converter rather than a second, weaker one. Headings map to Heading 1 to 6, lists to Word numbering with real nesting levels, fenced code to a monospaced shaded style, tables to Word tables with the header row set to repeat, and links to hyperlink relationships. The output is a complete OOXML package, so Word opens it without a repair prompt. The block of settings between --- lines at the top of a static-site post (front matter) is left out, and its title becomes the document title. Headings underlined with === or ---, task lists written as - [ ] and - [x], and web addresses typed without link syntax are recognised too.

Where it stops: Raw HTML inside the Markdown is shown as text rather than interpreted — that is a deliberate safety choice, since a Markdown file is untrusted input and interpreting its HTML is how script injection gets in. Pictures at a web address are not downloaded; embed them as data URIs to include them. Footnotes, definition lists and other extensions beyond CommonMark plus GitHub tables and strikethrough are not supported.

What each piece of Markdown becomes

MarkdownIn the Word document
# … ######Heading 1 … Heading 6 styles
- item and 1. item, indentedWord bullets and numbering with real levels
**bold**, *italic*, ~~struck~~Bold, italic, strikethrough
`code` and ``` fenced blocksMonospaced runs and shaded paragraphs
[text](https://…)A clickable Word hyperlink
| a | b | tablesA Word table with a repeating header row
> quoteThe Quote style with a left rule
--- on its own lineA horizontal rule, or a page break if you prefer
Two spaces at end of lineA line break inside the paragraph

Why raw HTML in your Markdown stays as text

Markdown allows HTML, and many converters pass it straight through. A Markdown file you were sent is untrusted input, so passing its HTML through is how a script tag or an event handler ends up being interpreted. Here that HTML is escaped and appears as the text it was written as. If you need the structure, write it in Markdown, or use the HTML to Word converter, which parses HTML deliberately and strips what is unsafe.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I convert Markdown to Word?

Paste the Markdown into the box or drop a .md file, check the outline of what will be in the document, then use Convert to Word. The .docx downloads and opens in Word, Pages or Google Docs.

Will Word headings be real headings?

Yes. They map to Word heading styles, so the navigation pane works and you can insert an automatic table of contents.

Do Markdown tables convert?

Yes. GitHub-style pipe tables become real Word tables, with the header row marked to repeat across pages.

Can the document be edited normally?

Yes. It is an ordinary .docx with no restrictions, no macros and no author name recorded.

What happens to inline HTML in my Markdown?

It is shown as text rather than interpreted, on purpose — interpreting HTML from a file you were sent is how script injection happens. Use standard Markdown, or the HTML to Word converter if the input really is HTML.

Are images included?

Images embedded as data URIs are included. Images at a web address are never downloaded, for security, and the report lists them with their alt text kept in place.

What happens to the front matter at the top of my post?

The settings block between --- lines that Jekyll, Hugo and other static-site generators use is left out of the document, and its title becomes the Word document’s title, so the file opens as the post rather than a list of keys.

Do task lists keep their check boxes?

Yes. - [ ] becomes ☐ and - [x] becomes ☑ at the start of the item, so a checklist still reads as one in Word.

Is my content uploaded?

Not with the visual editor, which converts in your browser. Process file sends the Markdown to our server, where it is written to a temporary folder for that request and deleted as soon as the job finishes. Either way, no address in your Markdown is ever requested.
