How it works

What happens to your file.

The PNG is decoded and re-encoded as JPG at the quality you choose. JPG has no transparency, so any transparent area has to become a colour: it is flattened onto white, which matches what most documents and pages expect behind an image. Because JPG approximates detail rather than storing every pixel, the file is usually far smaller than the PNG it came from, and the saving is largest on photographs.

Where it stops: Transparency cannot survive the trip; it is flattened to white, and if your image was meant to sit on a dark background it will arrive with a white box around it. JPG is lossy, so each save discards a little more detail, and it handles sharp edges poorly: screenshots with text, logos and line art often look worse as JPG than they did as PNG, even at high quality.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I convert PNG to JPG for free?

Add your images, choose a quality level, and download. No account, no watermark, no limit on how many you convert.

What happens to the transparent parts?

They are flattened onto white, because JPG has no way to store transparency. Keep the PNG if you need the transparency later.

Will my screenshot look worse?

Possibly. JPG handles sharp edges and text poorly, so screenshots and line art often look softer. Use PNG to WebP instead if you want a smaller file without that trade.

How much smaller will the file be?

On photographs, often several times smaller. On flat graphics and screenshots the saving is much smaller, and sometimes not worth the quality cost.
