How it works

What happens to your file.

The JPG is decoded to raw pixels and written out as PNG, which stores those pixels losslessly. Whatever detail JPG discarded when the photo was first saved does not come back, but nothing further is lost from this point on, so repeated rounds of editing and saving no longer soften the picture. Storing every pixel exactly is also why a PNG is typically several times the size of the JPG it came from.

Where it stops: This does not recover quality that JPG already threw away, and it does not add transparency: a JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG arrives fully opaque until you erase part of it in an editor. Expect the file to grow substantially, which makes PNG a poor choice for photographs you intend to put on a web page.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I convert JPG to PNG for free?

Add your images and download the converted files. No account, no watermark, no cap on how many you run.

Does this make the background transparent?

No. A JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the PNG comes out fully opaque. Use Background Remover if transparency is what you actually need.

Will converting improve the quality?

It cannot. Detail lost when the JPG was first saved is gone for good. What PNG gives you is no further loss from here.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG stores every pixel exactly instead of approximating them. That is the cost of being lossless.
