Resize Video

Resize video to custom dimensions or to 1080p, 720p, vertical and square presets, with the aspect ratio kept safe so nothing is stretched. Resolution is usually the largest single factor in video file size, so scaling down is often the most effective way to make a video smaller and faster to load. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

How it works

What happens to your file.

FFmpeg scales the video to the chosen dimensions with aspect-ratio-safe arithmetic, so width and height stay proportional and the encoder always receives valid even dimensions. Only the picture changes, so the sound is copied across untouched wherever the container accepts it. The result is an MP4 that starts playing while it is still downloading. A phone video filmed upright stays upright: the 1080p and 720p presets give it a 1080 × 1920 or 720 × 1280 frame instead of a small picture between black bars. DVD and HDV video, stored with non-square pixels, is converted to square pixels first so it is not squashed, HDR video is tone-mapped to standard range, and every audio track is kept.

Where it stops: Enlarging a video does not create detail that was never recorded; scaling up simply produces a larger, softer picture. Changing to a different aspect ratio necessarily either crops the frame or adds bars, and you choose which.

Questions

Common questions.

How much smaller will the file be?

Halving both width and height quarters the pixel count and typically cuts the file size by around sixty to seventy-five percent, which is far more than any quality setting achieves on its own.

Will the video look stretched?

No. Scaling preserves the aspect ratio. Where the new shape differs from the source, you choose between keeping the whole frame, which adds bars beside the picture, and filling the shape, which crops the edges instead.

Can I upscale to 4K?

You can, but it will not add detail. The result is a bigger file that looks the same or slightly softer than the original.

Will a vertical phone video stay vertical?

Yes. The 1080p and 720p presets follow the video’s orientation, so an upright clip becomes 1080 × 1920 or 720 × 1280 rather than being boxed into a landscape frame. Choose Square or Vertical, or a custom size, for a different shape.
