Text Difference Checker

Put two versions of a text side by side and see exactly what changed: what was added, what was removed, and what was rewritten. It runs in your browser, so neither version is sent anywhere. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

When you need this

What people use it for.

Finding what a colleague actually changed in a document they sent back
Checking which clause moved between two versions of a contract
Comparing a draft against the version you published
Spotting the one line that differs between two config or data files
How it works

What happens to your file.

Both versions are compared in your browser with a local diff: neither one is uploaded or stored. The comparison finds the longest sequences the two texts have in common and treats whatever falls between them as changed, which is why a paragraph moved wholesale is recognised rather than reported as a large deletion followed by a large insertion. Side by side shows the two versions aligned; the inline view shows one text with the changes marked in place. The similarity percentage is the proportion of content the two share, not a judgement about meaning.

Where it stops: This compares characters, not sense. Rewording a sentence to say the same thing in different words shows as a change, and a similarity percentage tells you how much text the versions share rather than whether they agree. Very large texts take longer to compare, because the work grows faster than the length. Formatting is not compared: paste plain text, and use Compare PDF for documents.

Questions

Common questions.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Both versions are compared in your browser, so neither leaves your computer and neither is stored.

What does the similarity percentage mean?

It is the proportion of content the two texts share. It measures overlap, not agreement: a rewrite that means the same thing will score low.

Can I compare two PDFs or Word files?

Not here; this compares plain text. Use Compare PDF for documents, or extract the text first with PDF to Text.

Does it notice when a paragraph just moved?

Yes. The comparison looks for shared sequences, so a block that moved is recognised as the same content rather than as a deletion plus an addition.
