How it works

What happens to your file.

The count updates as you type, in your browser, using a local counter: nothing you paste is uploaded or stored. Words are separated on whitespace and punctuation rather than spaces alone, so hyphenated and apostrophised words count once. Sentences are detected from terminal punctuation, and reading and speaking time come from standard averages of roughly 240 and 150 words per minute respectively. Keyword density counts each term as a share of total words.

Where it stops: Reading and speaking times are averages, not measurements; dense or technical text takes longer than the estimate and a practised speaker is faster. Sentence detection follows punctuation, so abbreviations and decimals can occasionally split a sentence where a human would not. Languages that do not separate words with spaces will not count meaningfully.

Questions

Common questions.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The counting runs in your browser with a local counter, so what you paste never leaves your computer and is not stored.

How is reading time calculated?

From an average of about 240 words per minute for silent reading and 150 for reading aloud. They are estimates, so treat them as a guide rather than a measurement.

Does it count characters with or without spaces?

Both are shown. Character limits on social platforms and form fields usually mean the count including spaces.

What counts as one word?

Text separated by whitespace and punctuation, so a hyphenated or apostrophised word counts once rather than twice.
