Grayscale PDF

Convert a colour PDF to greyscale while keeping the text searchable. This cuts printing costs on mono printers and produces smaller, more consistent files for distribution. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

When you need this

What people use it for.

Printing a colour report on a monochrome office printer without odd tonal results
Reducing file size for a document where colour adds nothing
Meeting a submission requirement that specifies greyscale output
How it works

What happens to your file.

The document is reprocessed through a Ghostscript pipeline that converts colour to greyscale at the PDF level, so text remains real text and stays searchable rather than being flattened into images.

Where it stops: Colours that differ in hue but match in brightness can converge to the same grey. Check charts and colour-coded diagrams before relying on the output.

Questions

Common questions.

Is the text still searchable afterwards?

Yes. The conversion happens at the PDF level rather than by rasterising pages, so text stays selectable and searchable.

Will my charts still be readable?

Check them. Colour-coded series that have similar brightness can become hard to tell apart in greyscale, regardless of the tool used.

Does this make the file smaller?

Usually, since colour channels are discarded, though the saving depends on how much imagery the document contains.
