How it works

What happens to your file.

HEIC and HEIF hold the same kind of picture as a JPG but with a newer codec, so the conversion decodes the original image and re-encodes it as JPG at the quality you set. Nothing is resized or cropped: the pixel dimensions come out identical. Because JPG is the older and less efficient format, the result is often larger than the HEIC it came from even though the picture itself is unchanged. The photo’s colour profile is kept, so the Display P3 colours an iPhone records look the same, and the date taken, camera and location carry over, so the JPGs still sort by date in a photo library; untick the option to leave them out. Each file keeps its name: IMG_0042.heic becomes IMG_0042.jpg.

Where it stops: A Live Photo converts only its still frame; the motion is not part of a JPG and cannot be carried over. HDR gain maps and portrait-mode depth data are dropped for the same reason. Where a HEIC holds a burst or a multi-image sequence, its primary image is the one converted.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?

Drop the photos in, pick a quality level, and download. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how many you convert.

Why will my HEIC photos not open on Windows?

HEIC needs a codec that Windows does not always ship with. Converting to JPG sidesteps that, because every system and browser can read JPG.

Does converting lose quality?

Re-encoding always costs a little, but at high quality the difference is not visible. The dimensions and framing are untouched.

Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC compresses more efficiently than JPG for the same picture. Getting the same image in an older format usually costs more space.

Is the date the photo was taken kept?

Yes. The date, camera and location carry over, so converted photos stay in order in a photo library. Untick “Keep date taken, camera and location” if you are sharing them and want those details gone.
