How it works

What happens to your file.

Each page is rendered at the DPI you choose and written out as PNG. DPI is the whole decision: 72 is screen size, 150 is comfortable for reading on a large display, and 300 matches print. Because PNG is lossless, the sharp boundary between black text and white paper stays sharp instead of developing the soft halo that JPG produces around lettering, which is why it is the better choice for pages that are mostly text or line art.

Where it stops: Resolution costs size quickly: a 300 DPI page can be several megabytes, and a long document at that setting produces a large ZIP. The output is an image, so the text in it is no longer text and cannot be selected, searched or copied; use PDF to Text if the words are what you want. Photographic pages are usually smaller as JPG for the same visible quality.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I convert a PDF to PNG for free?

Upload the file, choose a DPI, and download the pages individually or as a ZIP. No account, no watermark, no page limit.

What DPI should I pick?

72 for screen use, 150 for comfortable on-screen reading, 300 to match print. Higher settings produce much larger files.

PNG or JPG?

PNG for pages that are mostly text, diagrams or line art, because the edges stay sharp. JPG for photographic pages, where it is far smaller at the same visible quality.

Can I still select the text afterwards?

No. The output is an image, so the words become pixels. Use PDF to Text if you need the text itself.
