How it works

What happens to your file.

The document outline is read and returned as JSON, preserving nesting level, title and destination page for each entry.

Where it stops: Only bookmarks that exist in the file can be extracted. A document whose headings were never turned into bookmarks has no outline to read.

Questions

Common questions.

It returned nothing. Why?

The PDF has no bookmark tree. Many documents exported from word processors have visible headings but no outline attached.

Is the nesting preserved?

Yes. Each entry reports its level, so chapter and sub-section structure is retained in the output.

Can I get the page numbers?

Yes. Every entry includes the destination page it points to.
