Word to PDF

Turn a Word document into a PDF that looks the same everywhere, with headings, tables, images, headers and page breaks kept where the document puts them. LibreOffice does the rendering, so this is a real export rather than a picture of the text. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

How it works

What happens to your file.

The document is opened by LibreOffice in headless mode and exported through its own PDF writer, the same path as File, Export as PDF on the desktop. Paragraph and character styles, tables, embedded images, headers, footers, footnotes and manual page breaks all carry over as laid out. Where the document uses a font the server does not have, the closest available font is substituted, which can shift a line or a page break slightly.

Where it stops: Font substitution is the one thing worth checking on a heavily designed document. Tracked changes and comments are exported exactly as the document currently displays them, so accept or reject them first if the PDF should be clean. Macros, form logic and linked spreadsheets do not survive into a PDF, because a PDF has nothing to run them with.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I convert Word to PDF for free?

Add the .docx or .doc file and download the PDF. There is no account, no watermark and no page limit.

Will my layout change?

Rarely, and usually only through fonts. The document is rendered by LibreOffice rather than retyped, so styles, tables and images stay put. If it uses a font the server does not have, the nearest available one is substituted, which can move a line.

Does it work with old .doc files?

Yes. LibreOffice reads the older binary Word format as well as .docx, and exports both the same way.

What happens to tracked changes and comments?

They are exported exactly as the document currently displays them. Accept or reject the changes in Word first if you want a clean PDF.

Is my document uploaded?

Yes. This conversion needs a full document engine, so the file is processed in a temporary workspace on the service, which is removed after processing.
