If the PDF carries real form fields, they are detected and you type straight into them, which is the tidiest result because the values sit in the fields the form was built with. Many forms have no fields at all and are just a printed layout, so text can also be placed anywhere on the page: you click where a value belongs and type. Checkboxes, dates and signatures work the same way in both cases, and the completed document is written out as a new PDF.
Where it stops: Calculated fields and forms with scripting behind them will not recalculate here; whatever you type is what the field holds. A form whose layout is a scan may need values positioned by hand rather than detected, which is slower on a long document. Where a process demands a certificate-based digital signature, the signature added here will not satisfy it.
