Reusing figures from a report that was only ever published as a PDF
Turning a supplier price list into something you can sort and filter
Collecting numbers from a form nobody has the source file for any more
How it works

What happens to your file.

Each page is examined for table structure rather than being read straight through as text. Ruling lines are used where a table has them, and where it does not, the engine infers columns from how the text aligns down the page. A table that continues across a page break is joined back together when its columns line up. Each detected table becomes a sheet or a block of rows, so the numbers arrive in cells rather than as one long string per line.

Where it stops: This finds tables, not meaning. A layout that only looks like a table to a human, such as figures separated by spacing alone with no consistent alignment, may come out merged or split in the wrong places. Merged cells and nested headers flatten, because a spreadsheet grid cannot hold them as they were drawn. A scanned PDF has no text to read at all: run it through PDF OCR first.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I convert a PDF to Excel for free?

Upload the PDF and download the XLSX or CSV. No account, no watermark, and no limit on how many tables come out.

Why did my table come out wrong?

Usually because it has no ruling lines and its columns do not align consistently, so there is nothing to infer structure from. Tables drawn with visible borders convert most reliably.

Does this work on a scanned PDF?

Not directly, because a scan holds no text. Run it through PDF OCR first to add a text layer, then convert.

XLSX or CSV?

XLSX if the document has several tables, since each keeps its own sheet. CSV if you have one table and want to load it somewhere else.
