When you need this

What people use it for.

Opening an export from a database or analytics tool that Excel mangles on import
Getting a spreadsheet into the CSV a system or importer insists on
Fixing a file where every row landed in one column
Rescuing an export where accented names arrived as question marks
How it works

What happens to your file.

Going from CSV, the delimiter is inferred from the file itself rather than assumed: comma, semicolon, tab and pipe are all recognised, which is what stops a European semicolon export collapsing into a single column. The character encoding is detected in the same pass, so UTF-8 and the older single-byte encodings both come through with their accents intact. A preview of the parsed columns is shown before anything is written, so a wrong guess is visible while it is still cheap. Going the other way, one sheet becomes one CSV, written as UTF-8.

Where it stops: CSV holds text, nothing else. Converting to it drops formulas down to their current values, and loses formatting, colours, merged cells, charts and every sheet but the one you pick. Numbers that look like dates, and long digit strings such as IDs or phone numbers with leading zeros, are the classic casualties in the other direction: check a few rows in the preview before converting a file where those matter.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I convert CSV to Excel for free?

Upload the file, check the column preview looks right, and download the XLSX. No account and no watermark.

Why did my whole row land in one column?

Because the file uses a delimiter the importer did not expect, usually a semicolon. Detection here reads the file to work out which one it actually is.

Why are the accented characters wrong?

That is an encoding mismatch, the file being read as one encoding when it was saved as another. The encoding is detected here rather than assumed.

Will I lose my formulas?

Converting to CSV replaces formulas with their current values, because CSV stores only text. Keep the XLSX if you need them.
