Flip Image

Mirror a picture horizontally, vertically or both. The pixels are moved, never recalculated, so the picture stays exactly as sharp as it was. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

How it works

What happens to your file.

Flipping is a rearrangement: each pixel is moved to its mirrored position and none of them are recalculated, so nothing is resampled and nothing softens, however many times you flip. Horizontal mirrors left to right, vertical mirrors top to bottom, both together give the same result as a half turn, and the resolution is untouched. The picture keeps its format, so a WebP stays a WebP and a JPEG a JPEG, saved at quality 95, while an iPhone HEIC becomes a JPEG. The colour profile and the date taken are kept, a phone photo is flipped the way you see it, and every frame of an animated GIF or WebP is flipped.

Where it stops: Saving is the one place quality can go: PNG keeps every pixel, while a JPG or WebP is compressed again when it is saved, which costs a little each time, so choose PNG output when exactness matters. A flip is not a rotation: a sideways photo needs Rotate Image, and flipping it will only mirror the sideways version. Anything containing text, a logo or a recognisable layout will read backwards afterwards, which is fine for transfer printing and wrong for almost everything else. Faces are subtly asymmetric, so a flipped portrait often looks slightly off to people who know the person.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I flip an image for free?

Upload it, choose horizontal, vertical or both, and download. No account, no watermark, no limit.

Does flipping lose any quality?

Not from the flip: pixels are moved to mirrored positions, not recalculated. Saving as JPG or WebP compresses the picture again, which costs a little; save as PNG and every pixel survives, however many times you flip.

What is the difference between flipping and rotating?

Flipping mirrors the image; rotating turns it. A photo that imported sideways needs rotating, because flipping it just mirrors the sideways version.

Why does my text read backwards?

Because a flip mirrors everything, text included. That is what transfer printing needs and what you want to avoid everywhere else.

Can I flip an animated GIF?

Yes. Every frame is flipped and the timing is kept, so it plays as before, mirrored.
