What happens to your file.
You drag a box over the image and everything outside it is discarded, so unlike cropping a PDF the removed pixels are genuinely gone from the output. Locking an aspect ratio constrains the box as you drag, which is what stops a profile picture arriving slightly off square and being re-cropped by the site you upload it to. The pixels inside the box are copied at their original resolution rather than rescaled, so cropping alone never softens the picture.
Where it stops: Cropping only ever removes. A small crop from a large photo is still sharp, but a small crop from an already-small image gives you a small image: there are no extra pixels to recover, and enlarging it afterwards will look soft. Check the output dimensions against whatever you are uploading to, since many sites have a minimum. Saved as JPG or WebP the crop is compressed again at the quality you choose, so turn that up, or save as PNG, when nothing should be lost.

Everything you need, without a paywall.
Common questions.
How do I crop an image for free?
Upload it, drag a box over the part you want to keep, and download. No account, no watermark, no limit.
Does cropping reduce the quality?
Not the sharpness: the pixels inside the box are copied as they were, never rescaled. Only saving costs anything, because a JPG or WebP is compressed again at the quality you choose; PNG keeps every pixel.
How do I crop to a perfect square?
Choose the 1:1 ratio and the box stays square while you drag it, so the result is exact rather than nearly right.
Can I get back what I cropped off?
Not from the output, because those pixels are removed. Keep the original if you might want a different crop later.
