A new page canvas is created at the target size and the original content is scaled proportionally to fit within it, so nothing is cropped and the aspect of the content is preserved. With orientation left on auto, each page gets the sheet orientation that matches its own shape, so the landscape pages in a mixed document stay landscape, and an optional margin keeps content clear of the edge.
Where it stops: A4 and Letter have different proportions, so fitting one into the other leaves a thin band of extra white space on one axis. That is unavoidable without cropping.

Common questions.
Why is there extra white space after converting?
A4 is narrower and taller than Letter. Fitting content proportionally leaves a small margin rather than stretching or cropping your pages, which would be worse.
Does the text get blurry?
No. Content is scaled as vector data, so text stays sharp at any size.
Can I set a custom size?
The standard presets cover A4, Letter and Legal. For other dimensions, add margins to reach the size you need.
