What happens to your file.
The photo is opened and positioned in your browser. The frame is drawn at the document’s exact size at 300 dpi: 600 × 600 pixels for a 2 × 2 inch US photo, 413 × 531 for 35 × 45 mm. The shaded band shows where the top of the head must sit and the solid line where the chin goes, worked out from the head height the rule allows, with the eye height too for US photos. Drag, zoom and straighten the photo until it lines up; a warning appears if any part of the frame is left uncovered. The saved JPG or PNG records 300 dpi so it prints at the right physical size, and the print sheet fits as many copies as possible on 4 × 6 inch, A4 or US Letter paper. Removing the background is optional and is the only step of the visual editor that uploads the photo. Process file does the framing for you on our server instead: the face is found, the head is measured from chin to the top of the hair, and the photo is scaled and placed so the head sits in the middle of the height the document allows, on the background colour it asks for (light grey for the UK). A photo with no face, with two people, or with a face too small to print sharply is refused with the reason.
Where it stops: The tool sizes and positions the photo; it cannot judge expression, lighting, shadows, glasses or focus, which are checked too. Rules change and can differ by application type, so check the current official guidance before you apply. Automatic background removal can struggle with fine hair against a busy background, so check the edges.
Photo sizes and head heights
These are the numbers the guides are drawn from. Each authority has more rules than size, covering expression, lighting and background, so read the official page as well.

Printing the sheet at the right size
- Print at 100% or “Actual size”. “Fit to page” shrinks every photo and makes it the wrong size.
- For a photo lab, download the 4 × 6 inch JPG sheet and order a standard 4 × 6 print.
- For a home or office printer, the PDF places each photo at its exact millimetre size.
- Cut along the light grey lines. Where copies sit edge to edge to fit more on the page, cut along the photo edges.

Common questions.
Will my photo definitely be accepted?
No tool can promise that. The guides make the size and head position match the published rule, but authorities also check expression, lighting, shadows, glasses and background, and rules change. Always check the current official guidance.
What size is a US passport photo in pixels?
2 × 2 inches at 300 dpi is 600 × 600 pixels, with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches, or 300 to 412 pixels, from chin to top of head. The saved file is exactly 600 × 600 with 300 dpi recorded.
My country is not listed. Can I still use it?
Yes. Choose Custom size and enter the photo width, height and allowed head height in millimetres from the official rules. The guides and the print sheet use those numbers.
How do I print passport photos at home?
Download the print sheet as a PDF and print it at 100% or “Actual size” on photo paper. For a photo lab, download the 4 × 6 inch JPG sheet instead.
Can it line up my face automatically?
Yes, with Process file. The face is found, the head is measured from the chin to the top of the hair, and the photo is scaled and centred so the head fills the middle of the height the document allows, on the background colour it asks for. The visual editor is there when you want to place it by hand.
Is my photo uploaded?
In the visual editor, positioning, resizing and the print sheet all happen in your browser; only if you press “Remove the background” is a copy uploaded to our processing server, which returns the cut-out. Process file sends the photo to our server to find the face and frame it. Either way the temporary workspace is removed after processing.
Can I remove the background?
Yes, optionally. The background is cut out and replaced with the plain colour you choose. Check the edges around hair, and where you can, take the photo against a plain wall, which gives the cleanest result.
