How it works

What happens to your file.

The photo is opened and framed in your browser on a square canvas at the size you choose. A dashed circle shows the crop most platforms apply to a square photo, and an oval shows a comfortable size for the face. Drag, zoom and straighten until it looks right. Save a square JPG or PNG for platforms that crop it themselves, or a PNG circle that is transparent outside. Removing the background is optional and is the only step that uploads the photo; the cut-out is placed over the colour you choose.

Where it stops: Automatic background removal works best with a clear subject against a reasonably plain background, and fine hair can need a second look. A small photo can be enlarged but not sharpened, so start from the largest version you have.

Questions

Common questions.

What size should a profile picture be?

400 × 400 pixels is the size LinkedIn recommends and suits most platforms. Choose 1024 × 1024 for one file sharp enough to use anywhere, since platforms scale large pictures down.

Should I upload a square or a circle?

Most platforms, including LinkedIn and Microsoft Teams, want a square and crop it to a circle themselves, so choose Square. Choose Circle for places that show the picture exactly as it is, such as a website or a slide.

How do I change the background?

Press “Remove the background”, then pick a background colour. The cut-out is placed over that colour, and you can switch back to the original background at any time.

Is my photo uploaded?

Framing and saving happen in your browser. Only the optional background removal uploads a copy to our processing server, which returns the cut-out; the temporary workspace is removed after processing.

Will it add a watermark?

No. The saved picture has no watermark and no branding.
