How it works

What happens to your file.

Noise is what varies between neighbouring pixels that should look alike, so the filter compares each pixel with the area around it and pulls back the variation that does not belong to an edge. Edges are the part worth protecting: it is the difference between removing grain from a wall and removing the eyelashes from a face. JPEG artefacts are treated the same way, since blockiness is variation along the boundaries of the compression blocks rather than in the picture itself.

Where it stops: Every denoiser trades detail for smoothness, and there is no setting that only removes the bad kind. Push it hard and skin turns waxy, fabric loses its weave and fine text goes mushy, because at some point the filter cannot tell faint detail from faint noise. Work up from a light setting and stop at the first one that looks acceptable. It also cannot recover detail the noise destroyed; it hides what is left.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I remove noise from a photo for free?

Upload it, choose a strength, compare before and after, and download. No account and no watermark.

Why does my photo look plasticky?

The setting is too strong. Past a point the filter cannot distinguish faint detail from faint noise, so skin and fabric smooth out. Work up from a light setting instead.

Can it fix a blurry photo?

No. Noise and blur are different problems. Denoising removes speckle; it does not restore focus, and no tool here recovers detail that was never captured.

Will it help a heavily compressed image?

Yes, for the blockiness. The detail that compression discarded is gone, but the artefacts it introduced can be softened considerably.
