Sharpen Image

Sharpen a soft photo, scan or screenshot by increasing contrast around edges rather than simply increasing overall contrast. It is useful after resizing, light compression, or a slightly soft camera shot where the detail is present but not crisp. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark to your result.

How it works

What happens to your file.

An edge-aware sharpening filter looks for changes in brightness and colour, then boosts local contrast around those transitions. Fine detail such as letters, hair, product edges and line art becomes more defined, while flatter areas are affected less. The strength setting controls how aggressively the edge boost is applied, and the preview is the guardrail: good sharpening should look cleaner at normal viewing size, not harsh at 400 percent zoom.

Where it stops: Sharpening cannot fix an image that is badly out of focus, motion-blurred, pixelated or saved at too low a resolution. It also amplifies JPEG blocks, dust, film grain and sensor noise. If the image is noisy, denoise first and sharpen lightly at the final size.

A safe sharpening workflow

  • Start from the original file, not a screenshot of the image.
  • Resize or crop first if the final dimensions are known.
  • Apply a low or medium strength and compare the before and after at normal size.
  • Back off if bright outlines, crunchy skin texture or noisy shadows appear.

Best fits

Sharpening is strongest on screenshots, product edges, scanned text and images softened by resizing. It is weakest on motion blur, missed focus, camera shake and images that have already been heavily compressed.

Questions

Common questions.

Can it fix a blurry photo?

Only slightly. It improves edge contrast but cannot recover detail that was not captured.

Why do halos appear?

The sharpening setting is too strong for the image. Reduce it until edges look natural.

Should I sharpen before or after resizing?

For web images, resize first and sharpen the final size lightly.

Is sharpening the same as upscaling?

No. Sharpening changes edge contrast in the existing pixels. Upscaling creates a larger image and may rebuild detail with a model.
