What happens to your file.
Your image is decoded in the browser and drawn into a square canvas for every size you select. Large photos are reduced in halving steps so fine detail does not alias, SVG files are drawn directly at each size, and small sizes can be lightly sharpened. Each size is stored as a PNG, or as an uncompressed bitmap for older Windows software, inside one ICO file that is read back and checked before the download starts.
Where it stops: Detail disappears at 16 and 32 px, so a simplified mark reads far better than a detailed logo or a photograph. Most browsers cannot decode HEIC or TIFF images; for those the page offers a conversion to PNG on our server first, which only happens if you choose it.
Which ICO sizes do you need?
Windows and browsers pick the embedded size closest to the space they are drawing, so include each size your icon will actually be shown at.

What is in the favicon package?

Using the icon in Windows 10 and 11
- Shortcut or program: right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, then Change Icon, and browse to your .ico file.
- Folder: right-click the folder, choose Properties, open the Customize tab, then click Change Icon.
- Keep the .ico somewhere it will not be moved or deleted: Windows reads it from that path every time it draws the icon.
- Windows caches icons, so the old one can linger until you sign out or restart Explorer.

What is an ICO file?
ICO is the Windows icon format. One .ico file holds several copies of the same image at different sizes, and Windows or the browser uses the size that matches where the icon appears.
What image formats can be converted to ICO?
PNG, JPG, WebP, SVG, GIF, BMP and AVIF are converted directly in your browser. HEIC and TIFF files can be converted to PNG on our server first if you choose to, because most browsers cannot read them.
What ICO size should I use for a favicon?
Use a favicon.ico containing 16, 32 and 48 px. For phones, add a 180 px apple-touch-icon and 192 and 512 px PNGs; the Website icons preset creates all of them together with the HTML tags.
Does transparency survive?
Yes. Transparent areas in PNG, WebP, SVG and GIF images stay transparent at every size unless you choose a solid background.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Decoding, resizing and ICO encoding all run in your browser. The only exception is the optional server conversion offered for HEIC and TIFF files, which starts only when you click it.
Should the sizes inside the ICO be PNG or BMP?
PNG keeps the file small and works in every current version of Windows and every browser. Choose BMP for sizes below 256 px only if an older installer builder or resource compiler rejects your icon.
